THE BUDDHIST INSTITUTE “DASHI CHOINKHORLING”

The Buddhist Institute “Dashi Choinkhorling”(from Tibetan “the land of happy study”) is situated on the territory of the Ivolginsky datsan.The institute start working in 1991 and on the 16-th of June 1999 got license of higher educational institution. Its opening is a result of the rebirth and development of Buddhism in Russia and great interest in the Buddhist Philosophy of different people in the country. The building of new datsans, organisation of new Dharma-centers in different areas of Buryatia, Kalmykia, Tuva, various cities of the Russian Federation, strengthening of international connections,and the fruitful peace-making activities of the great Teacher, the Winner of the Noble Prize for Peace His Holyness Dalai-Lama the XIV.

 The main task of the institute is the rebirth of Buddhist traditions and orientalism in Russia and Buryatia. ”Dashi Choinkhorling” prepares Buddhist clergymen, scientist-buddhologists, orientalists, specialists in Old Mongolian and Tibetan languages.

About a hundred students(novices) from different parts of the country and from the Near and the Far Abroad(Belorussia, Yugoslavia, Mongolia and etc).They study the Buddhist Philosophy, Choira, Tsanid, Basics of Tantrism, correct performance of the religious rituals, medicine, astrology, five basic schools of the Buddhist thought:Pradzhnya-Paramita,Logic,Vinae,Mahamudra,Abhidharmakosha.The Philosophy of Gelugpa school is the basis of studying, which is complemented by the study of Tibetan, English, Russian and Buryat languages, basics of information technology, history, ethnography, culture and Art of the peoples of Central Asia.

The students constantly translate canonical texts. The lecturers of the institute are professors-Lharambas, Buryat lamas. The Reverend Teacher Eshe Lodoi Rinpoche supervises the whole course of training. The institute has several branches in different districts of Buryatia, where future students of the institute are trained. The institute is planning to increase the number of special subjects in accordance with the programmes of Tibetan, Indian and Mongolian Buddhist schools.

THE ENTRANCE ORDER TO THE INSTITUTE

Admission to the institute is on he basis of written examination(presentation in Russian or in Buryat languages),testing, interview and History.Testing,interview and History are for the purpose of discovering the general level of entrant’s maturity,his knoledge of Buddhism,aptitude for Logic and erudition.

The List of Necessary Documents to Enter the Institute:

1) Certificate of general education or diploma of higher educational institution

2) 6 black-and-white photos,size 3x4

3) Medical certificate form 086

4) Medical certificate from psychoneurological dispensary.

Entrants from datsans should have appropriate directives

Examinations are held annually at the beginning of July

There are two faculties in the institute – philosophical and Zhud (i.e.the faculty of Buddhist tantra,where the Philosophy and rituals of ancient science are studied).The period of study lasts 5 years.The lecturers of the institute are invited from the Buddhist monasteries of India,graduates of the institute or lecturers from other higher educational institutions.The usual day of study begins from 9 a.m. till 7 p.m.

History,Psycology,Education science,English,Mathematics, Information Technology,Buddhist Logic,Lam-rim,the basics of Buddhism,Old Mongolian language,Tibetan language Grammar,Conversational Tibetan language,Sogchen (memorization of texts)

2 course:

European and Buddhist Philosophy,Economic theory,Sociology,Political science,English,Buddhist Logic,Lam-rim,Old Mongolian language,Tibetan language Grammar,Conversational Tibetan language,the History of Buddhism,Translation of Buddhist texts,Iconography,Sogchen

3 course:

Law,Culturology,English,Natural sciences,Dagrig (Knowledge theory),Lam-rim,Sogchen

4 course:

Parchin,Lam-rim,Old Mongolian language,Basics of Meditation,Oriental Astrology,Oriental Medicine

5 course:

Parchin,Lam-rim,Old Mongolian language,Basics of Meditation,Oriental Astrology,Oriental Medicine

After graduating the institute “Dashi Choinkhorling” khuvarak receives the Certificate of Education and the title of Lama(the teacher). After graduation the most capable go to India to continue education in Goman datsan, the Buddhist monastery,which has historical connections with Buryatia. The traditional course of study lasts 16 years. After finishing this course of study lamas receive the title of Geshe. After receiving this title lama has the opportunity to defend next higher academic titles: Geshe-Doramba, Geshe-Gabchu and Geshe-Lharamba.
